Tucked away along the back cobblestone alleys of Kilkenny, Ireland, is a medieval pub that’s steeped in history, mystery, and magic.
Opened in 1324, Kyteler’s Inn is a charming spot for a bite and a pint. The original owner was a woman named Dame Alice Kyteler — daughter of a wealthy banker, 4-time widow, and convicted witch.
All 3 of Alice’s previous husbands had died under suspicious circumstances — so when her fourth husband began showing signs of arsenic poisoning, Alice and her maid, Petronella, were sentenced to burn at the stake for witchcraft.
Alice somehow managed to escape this fate and was never seen or heard from again. The leading theory is that she escaped to England. Tragically, Petronella received the punishment in Alice’s stead and perished at the hands of the Catholic Church.
